France Bans Skinny Models from the Fashion Industry

Last Friday, April 3rd, the lower branch of the French Parliament, the National Assembly, passed legislation that would ban dangerously thin models from the fashion industry. As part of a wider health care bill expected to become law this week, the fashion industry is targeted to help change the perception of body image in the fashion world. The bill is currently awaiting approval from the Senate.

NEDAwareness Week 2015 was a huge success! In addition to events across the country, we had buildings and landmarks across the nation light up in recognition of this week. These buildings are not only a light at the end of the tunnel that is an eating disorder for many people, but also an enlightening of the world of the truth about eating disorders. The theme this year, I Had No Idea, is a way for us to all speak about Eating Disorders without fear of not understanding---it is a week dedicated to learning and spreading our knowledge.

February 22-28, 2015 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Nationwide, advocates are paving the way for eating disorders awareness and assistance. In the United States, over 20 million women and 10 million men will suffer from an eating disorder at some time in their life. With these incredible numbers, it is encouraging to know that federal, state and local officials are working hard to gain eating disorders recognition.

In honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, NEDA will be joining with eating disorder organizations around the world to raise awareness and funds through the ‘Sock It to Eating Disorders’ campaign. Inspired by an international support network with Joan Riederer, the idea emerged among her many friends in honor of Joan’s daughter Erin who lost her life to anorexia.

While delegates to the 2010 International Conference on Eating Disorders in Salzburg were engrossed in discussing the conference theme of “Moving Forward Through Transdisciplinary Solutions”, news came of a young woman’s death from the effects of Anorexia Nervosa.

The death of this young woman, Erin Riederer, has given rise to a symbol of hope in the fight against eating disorders.
