I am a volunteer Navigator with NEDA. What’s great about being a volunteer with NEDA is the freedom to bring ideas to them on how to spread awareness of eating disorders. An initiative I have undertaken is lighting landmarks and buildings around the world blue and green to kick off National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAwareness). Of course NEDA’s home base in NYC has gotten the Empire State Buulding lit for the past three years, but I wanted to take the lightings to cities across the country.

Day two of the 2014 NEDA Conference was a day of hope. Both general sessions – the Family Panel and the session on Prevention – sent the message that when we stick together, we can make progress against eating disorders. We also announced the winners of the Feeding Hope Fund grants, whose innovative research projects will also make progress in the ways we treat eating disorders.

Howdy, y’all! NEDA is so excited to be here in lovely San Antonio for the 2014 NEDA Conference! This year’s Conference is themed, “Thinking Big: Uniting Families and Professionals in the Fight Against Eating Disorders,” and we are doing just that!

About ten years ago, I drove four hours from Nashville, where I lived at the time, to Atlanta, Georgia. I had no idea what to expect at the conference; I only knew one other person attending.

Our NYC NEDA Walk is this Sunday, October 5th, 2014! Check-in begins at 9AM, with the opening ceremonies starting at 10AM, and the walk time ending at 12PM We will be starting at Foley Square and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge to prove that recovery is real! We hope to see you all there, and have been getting some great responses on our Twitter feed @NEDAstaff, under the hashtag, #WhyINeedAWalk.

On September 23, Governor Cuomo signed S2530/A5294 into law, legislation that amends the public health law to establish the Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention Program within the New York State Department of Health. The legislation was passed by the New York State Senate and Assembly in June 2014.

NEDA’s Junior Board is made up of nine passionate individuals who are dedicated to making strides in the fight against eating disorders. These individuals have pledged to assist the work of NEDA as both advocates and fundraisers. Their major fundraising event of the year, called Striking Out Eating Disorders, was held June 5th in New York City at Frames Bowling Lounge.

Weight-loss diet scams are “a crisis in consumer protection,” said Senator Claire McCaskill in a Congressional hearing this week on false advertising. The Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance, led by McCaskill, convened the hearing to “examine the deceptive advertising and marketing practices of weight-loss products and their effects on American consumers.”
